BF2 patch wont run

Make sure your win XP home is up to date.  What is your hard drive, power supply, and memory?.  Please describe in detail how the game loads  when you click on BF2.exe
 
What about your monitor, give spec.

Well sry i forgot to mention my hdd and stuff, it is

400 gb

uhh not sure what my power supply is but it think its good enough for bbf2

win xp home sp3

my monitor is a small one i think its a 15" acer

but im getting a bigger one soon

well first i double click the exe then it loads up the bf2 sign thing then goes blank for about 5 seconds then crashes to desktop with no error message

Try this:
Go into My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\000x
the "x" is probably a "1"
In that folder
there is a file - Video.con
Open it with notepad and the line that reads
VideoSettings.setResolution
set your desktop resolution and refresh rate i.e.
VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@85Hz
Save it and then see what it does or doesn't do.

How many watts is your power supply and how many does your video card need. could be your video card is not getting enough juice

not sure what it my supply is, 400 watt video card though.

Is the computer a new build? Have you installed same BF2 CD and patches on previous computer and it worked? If the answer is yes to both, your problem is with your new PC. I recommend you reinstall your OS.

Try a Google search on clearing BF2 registry entries, so that you don't have any corruption there that is preventing a clean install and operation of the game. Be careful so you don't bung up your OS. I think I had to do this before when I had issues. After uninstalling and cleaning registry entries, install BF2, making sure that the patches are applied in order, which at this point is usually 1.4 off the disk, then 1.41 and then 1.5 patches.

Also Google your exact problem--BF2 crashes to desktop with no warning after reinstall.

Conventional wisdom is to have latest vid drivers for your card. Make sure that is updated, but you may actually have to revert to older drivers to get your card to work right with BF2--I have an AMD 4800 series that had black block corruption after I had updated video drivers. I ended up reverting to older ones. Make sure you have a clean un- and re-install of vid drivers, whichever version you try.

Well sniper.nkc it is quite new and yes the patches and install have worked on another pc. but i think reinstalling the OS would be a last option for me.

THCV: iv tried the registry but i think back dating my gpu drivers might work ill let you guys know if it works.

Funny thing is the drivers i got on a disk for my gpu didnt work i had to use a friends drivers on another disk for it to work im going to try and reinstall them from my disk

Well i reinstalled the drivers for my gpu and the reinstalled the game and the patches still dont work.... iv just about given up..

Not sure if this is your first build, but you need to review and double check your hardware.  Make sure you have a 400 Watt PS or better to run your video card.  Make sure your internal graphics accelerator is disabled since you are using an external video card.  Also make sure you have a minimum 2GB of memory, I prefer 4GB minimum to run your game.  You need to run a video benchmark to see if your PC is working properly.  There are plenty of free benchmark tools and this will tell you if your rig is stable under stress.  These are just some things you will need to look at.  Double check everything.  I have found overclockers.com to be helpful when I had problems with my build

Will the game start up before any patches are installed?

my 400 ps died had a crap ps it is only 288 it still works

No, it doesn't start up at all even if I get the game working I can't play on any servers because the 1.5 patch doesn't work.

Thanks sniper.nkc i have arount 4gb of ram im going to get more around six or eightgb soon ill have a look and see what my pc wattage is ill let you know.

it is my first build and my first pc but i ave used another one for a while before i got this one finished.

I am also looking into getting a new cpu a Intel quad core 3.1 GHZ

What drivers are you using for your video card?
Have you downloaded and installed the latest video drivers for your card from the cards site?

my drivers are the latest.

Can someone help me out I haven't got an answer in a week....

First off, do a complete, clean uninstall of BF2. Find the appropriate procedure on the web for your OS (don't forget 32 bit vs 64 bit). This involves editing the registry.

I would search the AMD site for the proper procedure to cleanly uninstall your vid drivers, then install the OLDER ones from your disk. You can always install the latest ones if the older ones don't work. Here's a page with older ATI drivers--I can't vouch for this site's integrity, so scan any files downloaded.

After this, run the install program, let it do its thing, and make a note of what patches it installs off the disk, and what order. Then install any remaining patches needed, in the correct order.

Make sure your resolution is set to something reasonable that your vid card, monitor, windows, and BF2 easily support, such as 800 x 600 @ 60hz or 1024 x 768 @ 60hz--make sure you set the refresh rate to 60hz for now, since an older monitor shouldn't have any problems with that rate.

After doing all this and before starting the game, go to www.evenbalance.com to download the Punkbuster updater, run it, add BF2 to the list of games to check for updates, choose it, then update it.

Try it now.

HTH, if after all this you're still having problems, the best thing would be to un/reinstall windows if BF2 is that important to you, but keep in mind that Microsoft is terminating all support for all versions of XP as of April 8th.
