I am just upgrading my processor on my socket 939 board. I appreciate your input since I know many of you guys are in the IT field.

AMD Opteron 170 2.0 ghz versus AMD 64 X2 4800+ 2.2 ghz

Main difference is the L2 cache the extra 200 mhz is not that much of a increase.

AMD Opteron 170, Dual Core socket 939
for $49.99
L2 cache - 2 MB ( 2 x 1 MB )

Or

AMD 64 X2 4800+, Dual core socket 939
for $58
L2 Cache - 1MB ( 2 x 512KB )

I suspect the two will perform much the same (Opteron's larger cache should make up for the lower clock speed). However, I see the Opteron is bare -- no cooling. Do you already have that? If yes, then the Opteron is the better deal.

That said, personally I would lean towards the Athlon only because I like to over-clock my systems and I can usually get a solid 15% more out of the Athlon 64 X2 (with good RAM and cooling of course). However, if your BIOS doesn't allow over-clocking then it's a moot point...

I hope that helps.

I've had the FX-53 and never Over clocked it, so if that's got a unlocked multiplier & I've never used it. I all ready have a heat sink for the socket 939 that came with my shuttle xpc system. With that said looks like tomorrow I'll make up my mind probably go with the Opteron.

by the way that up there was supposed to say a 4600+ 2.2 ghz I think.

I found this thread on another forums found it interesting read.

Overclocked the 170 Slightly raising it from 2.0ghz up to 2.3 Ghz raised the Voltage CPU to 1.4 so far running very stable.

Improved performance when I loaded Supreme Commander 2 matches load with in 4 minutes intead of just 18 minutes prior.

Hopefully once I get settled in my new apartment I should be able to build either the AMD 6 core AM3 or I'll go with Intel 1366 i5 4 core for about the same price. I am mostly thinking of future upgrades and I feel more stable with Intel then I do with AMD.

humm Overclocking CPU. I recently overclocked my AMD AM3 PhenomII dual core 3.0Ghz with 2GB DDR3 1333. I lowered the multipliers and increase the FSB and hit 3.2GHz but sometime its stable or not depending on what game im running, also due to my RAM. I gotta git DDR3 1600.
I really hate messing with the voltage since it makes it hotter and shorter life span on cpu.
