PostSubject: attention all mechanics!!!   attention all mechanics!!! Icon_minitimeMon Sep 09, 2013 6:14 pm

i have recently purchased a 1978 Chevy Nova 4 door, 250 cu. in. inline 6 and this is my problems...

at first the baby ran great and then suddenly started to sputter out and stall at stop signs and red lights...what i did to fix this problem was pulled the idle control screw out to let it idle faster...it no longer stalls however the idle screw is barely hanging on...half a turn out and that sucker comes springin out on me...and it still idles a little too low...

next i noticed that there is a valve with two pins on the top of the thermostat that look like they should have two vac hoses coming off and going somewhere...under the carb it looks like a vac hose is cut off and plugged...(keep in mind it has no A/C)

now my question is since i do not have A/C does this little adapter need to be plugged off...because i'm thinking that the reason my idle control screw is so far out just to run is because air is getting into my engine through this thing...

Your idle screw being almost out is not correct. Should be about halfway in. I would definitely try plugging the 2 vacuum ports and check the idle and make adjustment. Have you checked the air filter? Maker sure that is clean. Also, check the throttle plate to see if it opens when the car warms up. If the plate is closed/not working, maybe this is preventing air into the carburetor. If all else fails and you checked all vacuum lines for cracks and correct installation, then I would get a rebuilt carburetor.

Sounds like you have a potential vacumm leak. The therm fitting that's screwed into the top of your thermostat housing,is not letting air into your injun, nor manifold etc.

It could be something that's smog related, and or regulates air/fuel mixture, when injun reaches certain temp I.E. 180 degrees, opens or closes etc.

Various ways of checking it(spraying around any possible way of air entering the system, carb gaskets, etc etc). You look at all your vacumm lines, for cracks etc?

If a fuel deliever prob,it's more likely to happen at high speed/s,verses idle.

First bet,air/fuel mixture....carb and/or vacumm leak.

Again, the therm sensor solenoid on top of therm housing,IS NOT allowing air into system. If anything,it's obviously disconnected.

wow...thanks guys so far...didn't realize so many car guru's....

ok what i did first was put a brand new air filter and the little white pad that goes in there too...new pcv valve as well as new plugs...ran a can of B12 through the tank and all...

some of the turn you guys are using are above my knowledge base so yeah...i looked for a Haynes manual but just my luck they don't make one for the GM L6 250 Sad....

what i can say is that i'm sure i need to get a carb kit for it because the car came from Wyoming and i'm sure just buy looking at all the rubber parts and hoses that the previous owner was running with Ethanol gas for a quite some time...

i've looked at pictures and just basic looking at it i know for a fact there should be hoses there A/C or not...tomorrow i'm taking it to a local shop that's got great reviews from everyone i've talked to and getting a vac test and timing done...75 bucks for 2 hours of diagnosis and repairs...i may just get the entire engine overhauled because i know for a fact that Oklahoma is switching to Ethanol Only gas here in about a month...so this will be a major problem for my baby

Altitude might be an issue too,if was a Wyoming car. Might have jets in carb, for high altitude etc.
