Hey all, I know that this has been an issue for a long time and most of you have probably found a way to resolve it. I am still getting kicked by PB for "service communication failure" and "heartbeat stopped"....etc... I have tried multiple resolutions with only minimal positive results. I have no modded content and want to play without trying to join a gazillion times b4 I actually stay on server long enough to get my boots dirty. Any help is greatly appreciated

I found these answers....
See if any of these works for you.

"There have been a couple of new PB updates and some players are being kicked due to it.

Ive been digging information out as much as possible and believe the problem to be a firewall issue. PB is unable to communicate with some peoples computers due to their firewall settings.

There have been about three known PB messages which say something like

"Heartbeats stopped" , "Handshakes failed" and another initialization error,

PB is NOW running as a service (process) When you start BF2, your firewall needs to accept a service called PnkBstrB.exe which is in your PB folder.

If you go into your Trend, Norton, or Macafee firewall settings, add the above PnkBstrB.exe as a trusted service using the add button

Just updating your psetup.exe is not enough"

1. Make sure that you allow PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe access on your firewall (McAfee has been known to automatically add these services to the block list).
2. Download pbsvc.exe, which is a utility to uninstall and reinstall PunkBuster.
3. Open pbsvc.exe and select Un-Install/Remove PunkBuster Service.
4. Open pbsvc.exe again and this time select Install/Re-Install PunkBuster Service.
5. After installing, it will test your services. Make sure you get a "Test completed successfully without error." message.
6. Now download PBSETUP, which is a utility to update PunkBuster to the latest version. For Windows:pbsetup.exe
7. Open pbsetup.exe. It will probably have to check for updates, allow it to do that.

update your pb manualy and then enter any network game, preferably some with 0 players,
open up a console with "`"
type

pb_sleep 500 <press enter>
pb_writecfg <press enter>

voila, problem solved

Make sure you don't have any spy-ware running.

i think i had that problem but i fixed it by typing "pb_security 0" (without quotation marks) into the command line after joining a server
to get to the command line either press the button to the left of the one or press the tild(~).
hope it works

11. Click on Run.
12. Type regedit in the text field and press OK.
* Warning: Changes to the registry can cause your computer to operate improperly, so please follow these instructions exactly as they are written.
1. Follow these steps to back-up the registry so that should something go wrong, you can restore your system back to a working state:
o If you are using Windows 2000/XP/Vista, click on File, and select Export. Note: If you are using Windows 95/98/ME, click on Registry
o Then select Export Registry.
o Select All under Export Range.
o Type backup into the File name field, and click Save. You've now created a backup version of your registry.
2. Once you've created your backup, continue as follows.

5. Click the plus sign next to ControlSet001.

9. Repeat steps 5, 6, 7, and 8 immediately above for any other ControlSet folders you have, such as ControlSet002 or CurrentControlSet.
10. Close regedit.
13. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
14. Double-click on drive C:.
15. Double-click on windows.
16. Double-click on system32.
17. Look for PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe and if they exist, right-click on each one and select Delete.
18. Double-click on drivers.
19. Look for PnkBstrK.sys, and if it exists, right-click on it and select Delete.
20. Restart windows.
21. Follow the instructions here http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php to reinstall Punkbuster.
22. Try to play Battlefield 2

Make sure that Battlefield 2 and Punkbuster are on your Firewall's and Antivirus Software's 'Allow' lists.

Make sure that if you are running firewall and/or anti-virus software that the Battlefield and Punkbuster executables are in the allowed list and not on the block lists.

* The services that need to be allowed for Punkbuster are PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe.
o Note: These files are located by default in 'C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2\pb'

* Note: If you already have the executables in the allowed list, please remove and re-add them to the list.

Make sure Punkbuster is running properly

1. Click on Start.
2. Click on Run.
3. Type services.msc and click OK.
4. Verify that PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB appear.
* If these services appear but do not say 'Started' next to them, right-click on the first one and select Properties.
* Under the Startup type pulldown, select Automatic.
* Press the Start button just below the pulldown.
* Repeat this for the other service if necessary.
